Q & A
What is a Kitchen Garden?
A Kitchen Garden is created to promote harvesting food from your own backyard for your kitchen table. There is something magical about eating vegetables and fruit that you grew yourself. Even more than food production, we believe that the Kitchen garden is made to be beautiful. We desire for it to be a place for your family to gather, retreat, and enjoy together.
What does a full Kitchen Garden installation include?
A turnkey installation with Grow it Together Co means we do the hard work of designing, planning and implementing your kitchen garden project, all tailored to your lifestyle, needs, and vision for your outdoor space. We eliminate the confusion and frustration and set you up for success from the start.
Do you use organic gardening practices?
Grow it Together Co doesn't use any synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fungicides in our raised gardens, soil or plants. In addition, we use organic practices for pest control and tending.
What does a consult include?
When you book a consultation with us you receive an in person visit. The consult begins with a tour through your landscape, an introduction to our best practices in setting up a thriving kitchen garden, and finally a discussion about the kitchen garden designs that best fit your landscape and your priorities.
Will I get help growing my garden every season?
After your garden is installed, or if you have an existing garden, we offer personal coaching sessions in your own garden. This can be done on a monthly basis to ensure continued support or anytime you need some with a new season.
How much can I expect my garden to produce each month in Raleigh?
Harvests depend on what is planted in the garden, but a general rule is that for every square foot of garden space you have you will receive 1-2 harvests per month. So for a 30 square foot garden you can expect to harvest two servings of greens a day or one larger vegetable a day.
I have a small yard. Is there something that will work for me?
Clients are often surprised at the places a kitchen garden can be tucked in. In some cases ornamental landscapes can be removed to make space too. We believe there is always room to grow your own fresh herbs and vegetables. This goes for those living in apartments or condos too.
My yard is mostly shade. Will anything grow there?
Some vegetables might be more challenging to grow in part shade areas, such as tomatoes or cucumbers. However, herbs and greens can thrive in part shade spaces. In fact, you only need 4 hours of sunlight to grow lettuce!
Do I need to have experience gardening to have success with my garden?
Our mission is to bring back the kitchen garden and with that, our passion for teaching and educating our clients is our central focus. Most of our clients are beginner gardeners who have hired Grow it Together Co to not only set up their gardens, but to help them learn too. Once you learn the 3 keys to a successful garden, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you grow a “green thumb”.
How long does it take to install a kitchen garden?
Garden installations take anywhere from 2-4 weeks upon receipt of the 50% deposit. Cedar gardens are typically installed within two weeks of deposit and metal or powder coated gardens within 4-6 weeks from deposit. The team arrives on installation day with everything ready to complete your installation in one to two days.
Where do you get your plants?
We believe in supporting local small businesses and work with a variety of local growers to bring our clients the healthiest and most naturally grown plants.
Do you work with only homeowners?
We work with all types of clients - families, restaurants, schools… anyone who is looking to grow and harvest from the garden. We want to be a part of fostering a community focused on growing their own food, promoting sustainability, and supporting local small businesses whenever we can.
